We are having an extremely difficult time deciding on a name for Baby #2 if it turns out baby is a girl. For now I a occasionally call the baby "Atlas" because the abdominal pressure feels like the weight of the world is pushing down on my stomach. So it made me feel like this baby is trying to carry the whole world. We also have toyed with calling baby "Doodle" since he or she will be born so close to the 4th of July.
But I don't think Atlas or Doodle will work on the birth certificate. We need something respectable that won't be laughed at on a resume in 30 years.
If you didn't know this... Allison's name was literally picked about 2 minutes before her birth. We had a name in mind for many months and were about 80% sure of it. But about a month before she was born someone made a comment that made hubby sour on it a bit. So it was back to the drawing board. And there was sat (well, I lay) in the Operating Room and the conversation went something like this:
Me: "What if it's a girl? what will we name her?"
D: "Ummmm?"
Me: "Allison?"
D: "Allison"
Okay - that's probably not the exact wording but it was pretty close to that. Short conversation. Even then, it still took me three days before I would commit to putting Allison on the birth certificate. I had to let it settle on me for awhile.
In fact, it was such a last minute decision that when they brought Allison in and her Nana saw her for the first time she said "Hello, Baby {insert previously chosen name here}" and D had to say "Um, her name's Allison."
I am quickly suspecting we will find ourselves in a similar situation this time.
Here are our name requirements:
1. Must be two syllables or more. A one syllable first name would just sound silly.
2. Cannot be a color (e.g. Amber, Violet, Ivory)
3. Should not begin with B. I am open to this but hubby is not.
4. Prefer not begin with A since we already have an Allison. This is still somewhat flexible. We just don't want to end up with a housefull of "A" names.
5. Prefer something that has a built in nickname option (For example Allison --> Allie or Lillian --> Lilly or Katherine --> Kate, Katie, etc)
6. Needs to "mesh" with Allison. In general the style should be the same (i.e. nothing off-the-wall like Rainbow or Sunshine)
7. Cannot ever be confused for a boy's name (e.g. Taylor, Samantha (Sam), Patricia (Pat), Carson). I understand this is a growing trend, we just don't like it.
8. Should be relatively esy to spell and pronounce. It's okay if there are some alternate speliings (Allison, Alison, Allyson) but we want a name that 95% of the time, reasonable adults would be able to spell with no trouble.
So, there it is. You can take my poll on the right. Or if you have another suggestion, feel free to leave it as a comment.
