Self Care

How do you take care of yourself?  We hear this phrase a lot.  People say it as a sort of good-bye “Take Care of Yourself!” And lately I’ve been hearing it from all of my doctors, “You need to take care of yourself.”  And what do they mean by that – of course they mean eating a good nutritious diet (as much as I can) and getting some exercise in but they mean more than that.  They want me to actually care for myself.  The thing is, I’m not sure how to do that.  Even if I knew what part of the day I could carve the time from there is a bigger issue.  HOW do I care for myself?  What does that even really mean?

The two consistent suggestions I’ve received are “take a bath” and “take a walk.” However, I don’t really find a bath to be all that wonderful.  I have dry skin and I like baths hot so that’s not a good combo.  Plus, I kind of get bored in the bath tub.   Even when I read a book or magazine it’s not relaxing because I’m constantly worried that I’m going to drop it in the water.  And now that it’s getting dark so early it’s hard to find time for a walk.  So those two are pretty much out.

So what am I supposed to be doing?  I feel like I’m completely clueless about this.

Do something that gives you joy and/or relaxation and doesn't involve taking care of others. I get massages or acupuncture, or just read a book by myself. Good luck!!

I really enjoy a nice bath, but more then the bath itself I love the fun stuff I add to the water and the yummy stuff I use on myself in the bath or shower.

I have very dry skin too so when I have time for a bath (pre-baby of course) I add baking soda and essential oils. Oatmeal is good too. I really got into making my own body scrubs and such for a while and I'm planning on featuring some recipes on my blog as soon as I can find the time.

I know it's hard but doing something for yourself is so important. Maybe snuggle up with a book, tea and a blanket and just take 15 minutes of you time.
