Warmth

I've been thinking a lot lately about how to make our home feel more warm and cozy.  I see pictures of homes that look cozy to me.  And my sister-in-law's house is always so warm and welcoming.  I want that for our home.  I feel like our home feels somewhat cold.  But I can't seem to put my finger on how to warm the place up.  I know that having curtains help.  Plain blinds are really cold and the soft fabrics seem to make things feel cozier.

Everytime I think I've identified things that are "warm" it seems like it involves adding more "stuff" to our space.  And I 'm not much of a "stuff" person.  I don't like clutter and knick-knacks.  I'm not a modern decorator - more traditional really - but I really hate clutter.

How do you create a warm/cozy/welcoming feeling in your own home without filling it up with too many tchotckes?  All suggestions are welcome

Paint? I feel like my parents have a very warm house, and I think it has a lot to do with the fact that EVERY wall in their house is not white, or near white.
